Family in Pandeglang Living in Dilapidated House, Fleeing During Strong Winds
The family of Kholid and Yeni Farida lives in a house that is already badly damaged. They say they must evacuate every time strong winds blow, fearing the house could collapse.
“We have lived here since my child was 3 years old, and now it has been about 5 years. The house has been damaged for a year,” said Yeni at her home in Kampung Caringin Lor, Caringin Village, Labuan District, Pandeglang Regency, Banten, on Monday (3/8/2026).
The couple said they work odd jobs without a steady income. Yeni said their child also has to undergo routine medical treatment.
“How can we afford to repair it? My husband’s work is like that, and just paying for our child’s treatment is already a heavy burden,” she said.
She said the house leaks every time it rains. When extreme weather strikes, she, her husband and their three children must take refuge at a neighbour’s house to avoid being hit by debris from the building.
“When it rains, everything leaks and we cannot sleep. When there are strong winds, I run to the neighbour’s house with the children because I am afraid the house will collapse,” Yeni said.
She hopes there will be assistance for her child’s medical treatment, saying the child must undergo routine treatment every month.
“I only hope someone will care. My house is about to collapse, and my child still needs a blood transfusion every month. Hopefully there will be some help,” she said.
The Head of the Welfare Section of Caringin Village, Fathur Rahman, said Yeni’s family is not yet recorded as a recipient of the Family Hope Programme (PKH) or the Non-Cash Food Assistance (BPNT) scheme. He said the village government will propose the family to receive social assistance.
“They already have BPJS health insurance. But for PKH and BPNT, they have indeed not received them because the family falls under the fifth decile,” he said.
Fathur said the house repairs are also hampered by the status of the land. He said the village government will nonetheless continue its efforts to ensure the family receives assistance.
“We will still submit the proposal. But the system for social assistance recipients is now automatic, based on data and quotas set by the government. The village cannot directly determine who receives assistance,” he said.
