Family Found Dead in Tent After Suspected Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in Temanggung
Four family members were found dead in a tent at the Posong tourist camping site in Kledung, Temanggung Regency. Police suspect the cause of death was gas poisoning.
Police Chief Iptu I Komang Mahendra Deputra of Temanggung Police Station stated that an autopsy was conducted on Thursday (May 28) and concluded in the afternoon. Initial findings from the examining doctor suggest two strong possibilities: food poisoning or gas poisoning from combustion.
Komang explained that investigators had processed the crime scene and found a portable gas stove used for barbecue positioned at the entrance of the tent. He added that it is suspected that carbon monoxide from the combustion rose and entered the tent, which is pyramid-shaped, trapping the smoke inside.
‘After cooking, during rest time, the gas or smoke remained trapped inside the tent. The entrance and side ventilation were tightly closed. The Central Java Police Medical Unit suspects combustion gases, and based on the crime scene analysis, it is likely that the victims continuously inhaled these gases, leading to their deaths,’ he said.
The portable stove and food were brought by the victims, while the tent contained two mattresses and sleeping bags.
