A man with the initials JM from Purworejo has been arrested by police after allegedly raping a woman from Bantul, identified as JNP, in the Glagah area of Temon, Kulon Progo. He met the victim through an online dating application.

Kulon Progo Police Criminal Investigation Unit Head, First Inspector Subihan Afuan Ardhi, explained that the incident occurred on Sunday (3/5) at around 10 p.m. Western Indonesian Time. After becoming acquainted on the dating app, the two exchanged phone numbers and communicated intensively.

“The incident began when the victim got to know the suspect JM through a social networking platform, namely the Tinder application. Subsequently, the victim and the perpetrator exchanged WhatsApp accounts and continued communicating via that social media,” Subihan said during a case release at the Kulon Progo Police Station on Wednesday (24/6/2026).

Subihan explained that the perpetrator then claimed his name was Putra and that he worked at a state-owned enterprise. He invited the victim to meet in the area of Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA). However, during the journey, the victim received a message from someone named Zaki, who claimed to be Putra’s friend.

The victim was then asked to pick up Zaki in the Jalan Daendels area of Ngombol, Purworejo. After meeting, the victim was taken to Glagah Beach on the pretext of being introduced to Putra.

It was later discovered that Zaki and Putra were the same person, namely the perpetrator JM. The perpetrator then took the victim to a lodging house under the pretence of waiting for Putra, and raped the victim.

“Upon arriving at Glagah Beach, the victim was taken to a lodging house to wait for Putra. Once at the lodging house, the perpetrator threatened the victim using a knife to force her into sexual intercourse. Because the victim was terrified by the threat of violence, the perpetrator succeeded in committing the act of rape against victim JNP,” he stated.

Subihan said the perpetrator raped the victim twice inside the lodging house room. From this case, police seized a number of pieces of evidence, including the victim’s clothing, Rp 200,000 in cash, a mobile phone, and a motorcycle.

Meanwhile, from the perpetrator, officers secured the clothes worn during the incident, a knife with a wooden handle, and a black Oppo A58 mobile phone.

“The article and penalty we are applying is the criminal act of rape as referred to in Article 473 paragraph 1 of Republic of Indonesia Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code, with a maximum prison sentence of 12 years,” he concluded.
