Canada’s largest airline, Air Canada, has been rocked by an extraordinary safety scandal. A senior pilot who commanded hundreds of commercial flights and carried thousands of passengers over many years was found to be operating with a fake pilot licence and medical certificate. Canadian civil aviation authority Transport Canada, together with the federal police force RCMP, arrested Geoffrey Wall following a suspicious internal investigation report regarding his employment documents. Wall was taken into custody on 1 June 2026 and now faces criminal charges. Investigators stated he captained more than 900 domestic and international flights from 2009 to 2025 without ever obtaining a valid licence or completing the mandatory examinations.

The investigation began when officials discovered anomalies in Wall’s licence documents during a routine check in 2025. The finding triggered an investigative operation which subsequently uncovered the alleged years-long forgery. Police described the case as being akin to a film scenario due to the length of time the deception went undetected.

“This investigation and the details surrounding it are like a movie scenario. He rose to the position of pilot and for almost 17 years flew Boeing 767s, 777s, and 787s while earning a salary of nearly US$2 million (Rp 35 billion),” read a statement from Air Canada. In this case, Wall held a licence to fly commercial aircraft during his 27-year career at Air Canada, but police said he never possessed the Airline Transport Pilot Licence for Aeroplanes, also known as an ATPL-A, which was required when he was promoted to captain in 2009.

“This case is very similar to a doctor who is licensed to practise general medicine but performs brain surgery in his office,” said Milinovich. “Additional requirements and regulations exist for professional designations for a reason.” Wall retired in 2025, prior to the regulatory and criminal investigations.

Air Canada noted that Wall routinely demonstrated his ability to fly large aircraft safely. “Flight safety was not compromised by this incident because all pilots at Air Canada undergo mandatory recurrent training every six months to validate their flying competency, including a flight check with a Transport Canada-certified check pilot every 12 months,” the airline said in a statement posted on Monday (8/6). “However, appropriate licensing is a critical layer of the aviation industry’s layered approach to safety, and therefore Air Canada takes this matter very seriously,” the carrier’s statement continued. Wall has been fined by Transport Canada and faces seven criminal charges, including fraud over $5,000, two counts of document forgery, and three counts of possession of a forged trademark, police said. He is expected to appear in court on 29 June 2026.
