Faints After Constitutional Court Retirement Ceremony, Anwar Usman: I Was Short on Sleep Last Night

Former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court (MK) Anwar Usman fainted after the retirement ceremony for constitutional justices at the MK building. He collapsed while walking out of the waiting room for the hearing.

Observations by detikcom outside the Plenary Courtroom of MK Building I, Central Jakarta, on Monday (13/4/2026), showed Anwar initially participating in the procession exiting the courtroom. He shook hands one by one with MK staff lined up on the right and left sides.

However, as he stepped towards the exit door, Anwar Usman suddenly fainted and fell. He was then immediately taken back into the waiting room for further treatment.

Not long after, Anwar Usman regained consciousness from the faint. He stated that he fainted due to fatigue and lack of sleep.

“I was short on sleep last night, to be honest. I stayed up until dawn, as usual watching podcasts, and just got back from Bosnia,” said Anwar Usman at the MK building.

Today, the MK held the Retirement Graduation Ceremony for Constitutional Justice Anwar Usman in the Plenary Courtroom of MK Building I. The MK also welcomed two new constitutional justices, namely Liliek Prisbawono Adi and Adies Kadir.

Anwar Usman’s Hopes for His Successor

Anwar Usman conveyed his hopes for his successor as constitutional justice, Liliek Prisbawono Adi. Liliek officially became an MK Justice replacing Anwar Usman after taking the oath of office in front of President Prabowo Subianto.

“Hopefully he brings wisdom and blessings for the Constitutional Court and for the nation and state,” said Anwar Usman at the Presidential Palace complex, Jakarta, on Friday (10/4).

Anwar Usman said there were no specific issues for Liliek Prisbawono to pay attention to. According to Anwar, Liliek can work as a constitutional justice in accordance with the authority of his institution.

“No, just resolving cases related to the constitutional mandate. Article 24C is clear; the authority of the MK is to adjudicate and decide cases related to laws. Then next, to adjudicate or decide cases related to authority between state institutions. Then the third is the dissolution of political parties, the fourth is the resolution of election result disputes. That’s the main one,” he stated.
