Failure of election
Failure of election
From Republika
To say that the June 7 general election will fail reflects a small-mindedness on the speaker's part.
Freedom of expression is one of the human rights of each citizen. It includes the expression of doubt about honesty and fairness of the election. However, if the statement of doubt comes from former president Soeharto, it compels us to reflect on the matter more deeply.
All citizens should be aware that the general election is one of the nation's endeavors to strengthen a democracy that we all have created. It is our responsibility to join hands in cooperation toward honest and fair elections. We should think in a positive and optimistic way because in life, man has his hopes and prayers to obtain something that is best. Actually, someone who thinks in a negative way, is always pessimistic and in doubt about his own capacity, reflecting a characteristic of small- mindedness. We have hopes and our own capabilities, do we not?
What is the real situation toward the general election now? It is marked by clashes between parties. This must be seen as a learning process toward adulthood in politics which for many years was not given room for free self-expression. We must be convinced that with a long learning process the Indonesian nation will be able to become politically adult. They will be able to realize a nation that is just, prosperous, civilized and cultured so that in the present and future eras our beloved nation will become once again a respected nation with dignity. One of the conditions thereto is optimism, conviction and self-confidence.
