Failed Motorcycle Theft in Depok: Thief Caught After Struggling to Start the Vehicle
DEPOK, KOMPAS.com - An attempted motorcycle theft in Kampung Pengadilan, Sawangan, Depok, failed after the thief was spotted by residents. The thief was caught because he was having difficulty starting the engine of the motorcycle he was trying to steal.
This moment was captured on CCTV and uploaded to Instagram @depok24jam. The video shows the perpetrator wearing a black jacket, a black hat, and a mask.
The perpetrator is seen walking towards the porch of the house targeted for the theft and checking the surrounding area. Shortly after, the perpetrator pushed the motorcycle parked on the porch out of the house.
The perpetrator then sat on the motorcycle and tried to start the engine. However, after several attempts, the motorcycle still wouldn’t start.
Shortly after, a woman ran from behind the perpetrator, shouting and catching him in the act of the attempted theft.
Realizing his actions had been discovered, the perpetrator immediately let go of the motorcycle and fled. The perpetrator quickly got on a motorcycle belonging to his accomplice, who was waiting on the side of the road near the scene of the crime.
As the motorcycle sped away, two other women were seen chasing after them, but both perpetrators managed to escape.
The Head of Public Relations of the Depok Metro Police, AKP Made Budi, confirmed that the incident occurred on Wednesday (February 25, 2026) at approximately 7:26 PM.
Before the incident, the victim was relaxing in one of the rooms in his house.
Surprised, the victim then ran towards the perpetrator, who immediately realized what was happening and fled. Fortunately, the victim was able to secure his motorcycle.
“The unidentified man then managed to escape, while the victim’s vehicle was secured,” said Made.
So far, the police have conducted a crime scene investigation and collected testimonies from witnesses to investigate this case.
