Fadli Zon says government preparing reconstruction of Sade Traditional Village

Culture Minister Fadli Zon has said the government is preparing reconstruction and revitalisation plans for Sade Traditional Village in Central Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, with consideration given to disaster resilience.

Speaking at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Friday, Fadli Zon said President Prabowo Subianto had issued instructions to carry out the reconstruction and revitalisation of Sade Traditional Village promptly following a fire on 22 August 2026.

“This is being designed, and I have also spoken with the Governor of NTB. There are 75 traditional buildings, if I am not mistaken. There are also kiosks and a mosque. The planning is being prepared and we must rebuild soon, revitalise Sade Traditional Village,” Fadli said.

According to Fadli, such considerations are important because a number of traditional buildings use wood and thatch materials that are highly flammable. In addition, electrical short circuits are also a factor that needs to be anticipated.

He said similar fires have previously occurred in traditional villages in East Nusa Tenggara and several other regions.

“This is a challenge going forward. I think perhaps fire extinguishing equipment should be provided,” he said.

A number of witnesses said the fire first appeared in one of the houses before spreading to other buildings, most of which used flammable materials such as wood, bamboo and alang-alang grass.

Sade Traditional Village is one of the oldest traditional villages on Lombok Island. The village has existed since the 16th century and has been passed down through 15 generations.
