Fadli Zon Remembers Chairil Anwar on National Poetry Day
The pilgrimage was accompanied by poetry readings and a discussion titled ‘What is the Importance of Chairil Anwar for Indonesia’. In his remarks, Fadli stated that his presence was a form of respect for the invitation from Chairil Anwar’s family, particularly his only daughter, Evawani Alissa. He emphasised that Chairil Anwar is an important figure in the history of Indonesian literature and is known as a pioneer of the Generation of ‘45 alongside Asrul Sani and Rivai Apin. Fadli also highlighted the significant influence of Chairil’s works, which remain relevant to this day despite being written in a short time. ’Chairil Anwar, who passed away at the age of 27, produced dozens of poems that continue to inspire across generations,’ Fadli said in a written statement on Wednesday (29/4/2026). He also revealed the government’s plan to install a statue of Chairil Anwar in Russia. According to Fadli, this step is a form of reciprocation after Russia donated a statue of Leo Tolstoy to Universitas Indonesia. ‘The statue will later be placed at one of the universities with Indonesian language studies, such as in St. Petersburg or Moscow,’ Fadli concluded. Meanwhile, Evawani Alissa expressed her gratitude and joy that her father’s works are still remembered by the public even 76 years after his death. After the flower-scattering procession, several poets such as Imam Ma’arif and Jose Rizal Manua read Chairil Anwar’s poems. Fadli also read a poem titled ‘What is Taken and What is Broken’. The event then continued with a discussion featuring Universitas Indonesia academic Maman Mahayana. In his presentation, Maman assessed that the initiatives of cultural enthusiasts in the Indonesian Literature Inspiration Park Community (TISI) are important as a long-term investment, particularly in instilling values that shape mindsets and attitudes. It is known that Chairil Anwar’s role in the development of national literature also shaped Indonesia’s post-independence cultural identity through the Generation of ’45. The great influence of this led to the date of his death, 28 April, being designated as National Poetry Day. To this day, Chairil’s spirit and courage in creating continue to inspire generations to nurture the language, enliven the imagination, and voice their times. The event was also attended by Special Staff to the Minister for Cultural Diplomacy and International Relations Annisa Rengganis, as well as writers such as Nanang R Supriyatin, Kurnia Effendi, and Dyah Kencono Puspito Dewi.
