Fadli Zon: Philatelic Archives Introduce Indonesia’s History to the Public

Culture Minister Fadli Zon has urged all sectors of society to better understand Indonesia’s historical journey through philatelic archives, which preserve records of significant events in the country.

“Philatelic archives allow us to see the signs of the times that document social, political, and cultural changes throughout the nation’s history,” said Fadli Zon.

He added that stamps, letters, and postal documents are not merely collectibles but also sources of knowledge that aid in comprehending history more holistically.

He continued that these items contain traces of social, political, and cultural shifts, helping the public gain deeper insight into historical periods.

According to him, philatelic exhibitions are an effective medium to bring the public closer to history through authentic and easily understandable sources.

“History is not always presented in black and white. Therefore, the current generation must critically examine the dynamics of past eras based on verifiable facts and credible historical sources,” Fadli Zon stated.

All significant historical events are featured in the exhibition titled “Philately as Cultural Archives and a Medium for Reading Indonesia’s History.” The event aims to expand public understanding of the historical values embedded in philatelic archives.

Through this exhibition, the public is encouraged to view Indonesia’s history through the lens of philatelic archives, which are often perceived merely as collectibles.

Semarang Mayor Agustina Wilujeng Pramestuti praised the philatelic exhibition, stating it adds value to Semarang’s Old Town area, which continues to develop as a cultural and historical hub.

“The exhibition enriches Semarang’s Old Town. The presence of various historical collections and archives serves as both an attraction and an educational tool for the public to better understand the nation’s history,” she said.
