Fadli Zon Deems Prabowo's Decision Not to Raise Fuel Prices Correct: Leaders Should Make Prices Affordable
Deputy Chairman of the Gerindra Party and Minister of Culture Fadli Zon stated that President Prabowo Subianto’s decision not to raise the price of subsidised fuel is the right move. He said that leaders are indeed tasked with ensuring affordable prices. “In our country, the leader’s duty is to make prices affordable and accessible to the public,” said Fadli during a discussion at the Ministry of Culture in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday (8/4/2026). He added that the public would be angry if fuel prices followed market rates. He noted that fuel prices aligned with the market would make life even harder for the people. “Imagine if prices were adjusted to market rates; the public would surely be angry, and their lives would become even more difficult,” he stated. Fadli also responded to the suggestion from Indonesia’s 10th and 12th Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) to reduce fuel subsidies amid the global energy crisis. Fadli said JK has a different viewpoint. “Yes, first of all, as I said earlier, this is a matter of school of thought,” he remarked.
