Faculty of Law at UI Investigates Alleged Sexual Harassment in Student Chat Group
Screenshots circulating online show conversations with a tone of sexual harassment allegedly involving students from the Faculty of Law at Universitas Indonesia (UI). The Faculty of Law at UI has begun investigating the case.
On 12 April 2026, the Faculty received a report regarding an alleged violation of the code of ethics that also potentially contains criminal elements, related to the activities of some students. Based on the report, the Faculty became aware of the circulating screenshots of conversations allegedly involving students and containing inappropriate content, including indications of sexual violence, as stated by the Faculty of Law UI on its Instagram account, viewed on Monday (13/4/2026).
The Faculty of Law UI strongly condemns all forms of behaviour that degrade human dignity and contradict legal values and academic ethics. The investigation into the alleged sexual harassment in the group is being pursued seriously.
Currently, the Faculty is conducting a serious, careful, and thorough investigation and verification. This process is carried out upholding the principles of prudence and justice, it emphasised.
If violations are found, the Faculty of Law UI will take firm action. The Faculty of Law UI will also coordinate with the relevant authorities if criminal acts are identified.
The Faculty emphasises that the safety and comfort of the entire academic community is the top priority. Safe reporting channels and necessary support are available for those in need. For this purpose, contact the Faculty’s Student and Alumni Manager as the point of contact, it added.
The Faculty of Law UI also calls on all parties to refrain from disseminating unverified information and to respect the ongoing process.
From the circulating screenshots viewed on Monday (13/4/2026), conversations with a tone of sexual harassment from several individuals suspected to be students of the Faculty of Law UI are evident. In the group, they made remarks targeting other female students.
UI Rector Heri Hermansyah has spoken out regarding the controversy. He assured that he will monitor the progress of the case in the Faculty of Law.
I only heard about it last night, and I’ve already asked the dean again, waiting for a response. But I’ve also seen in various media that the Dean of the Faculty of Law has responded. So, the directorate will monitor how it’s handled at the faculty level. Let’s all monitor it together; we fight sexual harassment, Heri explained.
