Faculty of Industrial Engineering at UPN Veteran Yogyakarta Declares Zero Tolerance for Sexual Violence

In response to sexual violence incidents on campus, the Faculty of Industrial Engineering (FTI) at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) ‘Veteran’ Yogyakarta has issued a firm statement regarding its commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and dignified academic environment. Dean of FTI UPN ‘Veteran’ Yogyakarta, Awang Hendrianto Pratomo, affirmed that the entire academic community agrees to uphold the institution’s honour and integrity to produce intelligent and morally upright generations. This is outlined in Statement Letter No. 269/UN62.12/OT/2026 dated 25 May 2026. In his written statement, Awang outlined five key commitments. The first is zero tolerance for sexual violence: FTI enforces a zero-tolerance policy against all forms of violence, harassment, and sexual offences, whether physical, non-physical, or digital. The campus is fully committed to providing a safe space and justice for victims. The second point is condemnation of bullying and verbal violence. The faculty rejects all forms of intimidation, hate speech, and bullying. Dr. Awang emphasised that campus communication must always be based on politeness and scientific objectivity. The third is rejection of anarchic acts and vandalism. All destructive provocation and damage to campus facilities are strongly opposed. The university mandates that all expressions of opinion or disagreements be resolved through peaceful and constructive dialogue. The fourth is strict sanctions and law enforcement. Anyone proven guilty will be processed transparently and face strict academic and administrative sanctions in accordance with university regulations and Indonesian law. The fifth is provision of official complaint services. FTI offers secure and confidential reporting channels and collaborates with the university’s Task Force for Prevention and Handling of Violence in Higher Education Institutions (PPKPT) to provide legal and psychological support for victims. ‘This statement is made with full awareness and responsibility as a manifestation of our collective commitment,’ Awang said. He also called on all academic community members to collectively build a campus culture of mutual respect and free from all forms of violence. The declaration was supported and signed by representatives of lecturers, academic staff, and students from the Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Informatics, and Information Systems associations, as well as the FTI Student Executive Board, represented by its chairman, Muhamad Akbar Riziq. Strict sanctions Previously, UPN ‘Veteran’ Yogyakarta imposed administrative sanctions on five individuals found guilty of violence in the execution of the Tridharma of Higher Education. From the investigation, the five respondents were proven to have committed verbal harassment through sexually suggestive remarks. The five were given moderate sanctions with varying punishments according to their actions. Four were suspended from their Tridharma duties for two years from the date of the decision. Additionally, they were required to undergo psychological counselling with a university-appointed psychologist, with costs borne by the perpetrators. One lecturer received a one-year suspension from Tridharma activities. Rector of UPN ‘Veteran’ Yogyakarta, Mohamad Irhas Effendi, stated that the five respondents were proven to have committed verbal harassment during Tridharma activities. The sanctions are detailed in Rector Decrees No. 1538/UN62/TP/KEP/2026, 1539/UN62/TP/KEP/2026, 1540/UN62/TP/KEP/2026, 1541/UN62/TP/KEP/2026, and 1542/UN62/TP/KEP/2026, dated 22 May 2026. For the lecturer who received severe administrative sanctions, the penalty was determined at the ministry level, referencing Permendikburistek No. 55 of 2024 and Government Regulation No. 94 of 2021 on Civil Servant Discipline. Mr. Effendi also urged all parties to oversee the case handling objectively, responsibly, and with due consideration for victim protection.
