The chairman of the Golkar Party’s Southeast Maluku branch, Agrapinus Rumatora alias Nus Kei (59), died following a stabbing incident at Sadsuitubun Airport on Sunday afternoon (19/4).

Southeast Maluku Police are currently investigating the case. The police have urged the public not to be provoked by the aftermath of the stabbing.

CNNIndonesia.com has compiled several facts related to the stabbing incident as follows:

Stabbed upon arrival at the airport

The stabbing began when Nus Kei was on board Lion Air flight JT880 and landed at Karel Sadsuitubun Airport after a flight from Pattimura Airport in Ambon around 10:45 WIT.

Upon arriving at Karel Sadsuitubun Airport, Nus Kei disembarked and was met by family. He even chatted in front of the airport exit door.

A few minutes later, a man wearing a red jacket and a mask approached and directly stabbed Nus Kei. He then tried to save himself by entering the airport waiting area with a knife wound to his body.

However, Nus Kei collapsed due to his deteriorating condition from bleeding. Airport staff who saw Nus Kei fall immediately provided assistance.

Meanwhile, Nus Kei’s brother chased and caught the perpetrator. However, the attempt failed after the perpetrator resisted and managed to escape.

The victim’s family then decided to take Nus Kei to a nearby hospital around 11:10 WIT. Nus Kei received medical treatment.

However, Nus Kei’s life could not be saved after suffering bleeding and wounds to vital organs at 11:44 WIT. Nus Kei died with four stab wounds to the right and left chest, left neck, and spine.

Two perpetrators arrested

After the incident, police immediately conducted an investigation and arrested the perpetrators of the stabbing against Nus Kei.

Within two hours after the incident, police succeeded in arresting two perpetrators. They are initialled HR (28) and FU (36).

After being arrested, the two perpetrators were taken to Southeast Maluku Police Headquarters. They were then intensively examined by the Criminal Investigation Unit of Southeast Maluku Police.

Motive of long-standing grudge

From preliminary investigations, police stated that the stabbing against Nus Kei was motivated by personal grudge.

“The motive is grudge, from our preliminary investigation,” said the Chief of Southeast Maluku Police, AKBP Rian Suhendi, quoted from detikcom on Sunday.

Nevertheless, the police have not disclosed in detail the root of the problem between the perpetrators and the victim. Rian only mentioned that the conflict occurred when both were in Jakarta.

“The previous problem between the perpetrator and the victim was in Jakarta,” he said.

MMA athlete

Rian also revealed that one of the stabbing perpetrators, HR, has a background as a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter.

“Yes, that’s right, it seems (perpetrator HR is) an athlete (of mixed martial arts),” he said.

Meanwhile, perpetrator FU, continued Rian, is an ordinary citizen. Rian said that currently both perpetrators are undergoing intensive examination by investigators.
