Facts Regarding the Iranian Attack Showering Israel with Missiles
The Iranian missile attack against Israel has triggered a wave of temporary airspace closures across several Middle Eastern regions, with Iraq and Syria limiting flight operations and Iran closing parts of its western airspace amidst escalating tensions. Authorities stated that these measures were taken as a precaution following increased security concerns related to the recent cross-border attacks.
Iran closed its western airspace following the missile strikes launched towards Israel, as reported by state media on Sunday. Majid Akhavan, spokesperson for Iran’s National Civil Aviation Organisation, stated that the decision to close the airspace was based on security and safety assessments, adding that the airspace would remain closed until further notice, according to IRNA.
Following the escalation, Iraq and Syria also announced temporary restrictions in their airspace. Iraqi Civil Aviation authorities stated that their airspace would remain closed for 72 hours, while Syria ordered a suspension of operations for 12 hours, including at Damascus International Airport, until Monday morning.
Iranian state media confirmed the missile attack against Israel, stating that the strike was a response to recent Israeli actions in Lebanon. Iran warned that further attacks could occur if Israel continues its operations.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated they had intercepted all incoming missiles, although they warned that their defence systems are “not entirely impenetrable.” Sirens sounded in various regions of Israel, with reports of explosions in northern Israel. No fatalities or major damage have been immediately confirmed.
This escalation follows an Israeli strike on the southern outskirts of Beirut, which killed two people and injured 20, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. Iran has warned that such attacks could trigger a broader conflict, even as diplomatic efforts involving Pakistan and the US continue.
In related developments, the IRGC has threatened sustained attacks for a full week. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has expressed hope that Israel will not retaliate against the Iranian missile attack to preserve the finalisation process of the US-Iran agreement. Additionally, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has urged involvement in US-Iran negotiations to ensure regional sovereignty and security following the massive attacks targeting vital infrastructure.
