Facts on the Arrest of Tulungagung Regent over Alleged Extortion
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) arrested Tulungagung Regent Gatut Sunu Wibowo in a sting operation (OTT) on Friday (10/4). Gatut was arrested along with more than a dozen others and has been taken to Jakarta for further examination on Saturday (11/4). Here are the facts on the arrest of the Tulungagung Regent. 1. Total of 18 people arrested KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo stated that a total of 18 people were arrested in the OTT on Friday (10/4) night. Thirteen of them have undergone further examination in Jakarta. “Thirteen people were brought to Jakarta today in stages. The first stage, the Regent, arrived this morning. Then this afternoon, the second stage team brought eleven people, and the third stage brought one person,” he said on Saturday (11/4). Those brought to Jakarta include 12 people from the Tulungagung Regency Government environment and 1 other party. 2. Seizure of a sum of cash In this OTT, the KPK seized a sum of cash related to Gatut. The KPK suspects Gatut received a sum of money through unlawful means. “In addition to securing the parties, in this activity the team also secured evidence in the form of cash,” Budi said. “Alleged receipt by a state official through unlawful means,” Budi added. 3. Gatut’s brother also caught Gatut’s brother, Tulungagung DPRD member Jatmiko, was also secured in the KPK sting operation. He was also brought to Jakarta for examination. “True (one of the other parties brought to Jakarta is the Regent’s brother),” Budi told reporters on Saturday (11/4). 4. Designated as suspects Most recently, the KPK has designated Gatut and the regent’s aide Dwi Yoga Ambal or YOG as suspects related to extortion by officials in the Tulungagung Regency Government. Both were immediately detained for the first 20 days. The KPK secured extortion evidence including several pairs of luxury shoes up to cash worth hundreds of millions of rupiah from this operation. “From this closed investigation activity, the team also secured evidence in the form of documents, Electronic Evidence (BBE), several pairs of Louis Vuitton brand shoes, and cash worth Rp 335.4 million,” said Deputy for Enforcement and Execution of the KPK Asep Guntur Rahayu at a press conference at the KPK, Jakarta, on Saturday (11/4). There were four pairs of LV shoes purchased from the proceeds of extortion. Asep said Gatut is suspected of having received Rp2.7 billion from the extortion carried out. Meanwhile, Gatut extorted a total of Rp5 billion from his officials.
