Facts About the TNI Ammunition Depot Explosion in Madiun
An ammunition depot belonging to the Indonesian Army’s Central Equipment Division in Saradan District, Madiun Regency, East Java, exploded on Thursday morning, 16 July 2026. The blast, which occurred around 09:00 WIB, produced a loud bang heard by residents in the surrounding community.
Brigadier General Donny Pramono, Head of the Army Information Service, stated that the explosion happened while soldiers were conducting inspection and maintenance procedures on ammunition materials in one of the storage warehouses. “In this incident, one soldier was declared dead, four were seriously injured, and two others sustained minor injuries,” Donny said during a press conference on Thursday. All victims have been evacuated to a hospital for medical treatment.
The cause of the explosion remains unknown. Donny explained that the investigation team deployed to the scene is still working and requested the public to allow them space to operate optimally. “We also urge everyone to avoid speculation regarding the cause of the incident before the entire examination process is complete,” he said.
The Army has closed off the ammunition depot area for the duration of the investigation. Only the investigation team is permitted to enter the site, and even their access is conducted in stages.
Member of the House of Representatives Commission I, Tubagus Hasanuddin, has called for a thorough and transparent investigation by the Army. He stressed that this is crucial to ensure such a fatal incident does not recur. “I also encourage an evaluation of the ammunition depot’s placement if its location is too close to residential areas,” Hasanuddin said on Saturday, 18 July 2026. He added that if the depot no longer meets safe distance standards, it should be relocated away from civilian settlements to prevent similar events.
This explosion is not an isolated incident. At least three other ammunition-related explosions have occurred between 2024 and 2025. In March 2024, an Army ammunition depot in Ciangsana, Bogor, West Java, exploded due to expired munitions, though no casualties were reported. In March 2025, a mortar explosion during a Brimob training exercise in Surabaya injured ten personnel. The most severe recent incident occurred in May 2025 at an Army ammunition depot in Cibalong, Garut, West Java, where an explosion during the disposal of expired ammunition killed 13 people, including four soldiers and nine civilians.
