Here are several facts about the power outage in Jakarta last night:
Netizens’ Complaints on Social Media
The unannounced power outage in several Jakarta areas disrupted residents’ activities. Lighting on several roads appeared completely off. Public places such as Grand Indonesia Mall were also affected.
On social media, several netizens claimed to be trapped in lifts due to the power outage. “People are trapped in lifts due to an electricity disruption in Jakarta,” wrote the TikTok account @ijoe**. In the video he shared, several firefighters and security guards were seen manually opening the lift to evacuate trapped residents.
In addition, some residents suspected this happened due to efficiency measures. “Seeing Jakarta’s lights go out is scary too. Because the blackout isn’t just in ordinary places but big malls like GI. Then the Sudirman area, known as Jakarta’s economic centre. Not to mention public transport is in chaos. Why is this, efficiency?” wrote the X account @Kapten Haddo** on Thursday evening.
Reason for the Power Outage
Senior Manager of Communication and Public Affairs at PLN UID Jakarta Raya, Haris Andika, confirmed the disruption. He stated that the outage was triggered by a problem with electricity supply from several substations.
“An electricity supply disruption occurred in several Jakarta areas originating from several substations tonight,” said Haris, quoted from a written statement on Thursday, 9 April 2026.
Until 20:00 WIB, the outage was still occurring in Angke Subdistrict, North Jakarta and surrounding areas. PLN, according to Haris, is carrying out a gradual normalisation process and will continue to provide updates to the public.
MRT Jakarta Blackout
This electricity disruption also impacted transportation services. PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) reported temporary operational disruptions at several stations since 17:57 WIB due to power supply issues from PLN’s side.
Several facilities such as lighting, lifts, and escalators were temporarily non-functional, and all elevated stations experienced blackout conditions. However, MRT stated that the situation has now gradually returned to normal after quick handling.
“All elevated stations temporarily experienced blackout conditions, but they have now been successfully normalised,” said the Head of the Corporate Secretary Division of PT MRT Jakarta through a written statement on Thursday evening.
