Facts about the CH-47, Japan's 'Giant' Helicopter Deployed to Help Tackle Kalimantan Forest Fires

Japanese authorities, through the Japan Ministry of Defence (JMOD) and the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF), have sent three CH-47 Chinook helicopters to Indonesia. The three helicopters will be used to support forest and land fire suppression operations in Kalimantan.

“In response to the severe damage caused by forest fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia, Japan has decided to support firefighting operations by deploying Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) helicopters. This assistance is provided at the request of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia as part of international disaster relief activities,” JMOD stated.

The three helicopters were transported aboard the JSDF vessel JS Kunisaki.

“The Japan Ministry of Defence (JMOD) and the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) will deploy the JS Kunisaki carrying three CH-47 helicopters belonging to the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) to Indonesia as soon as all preparations are complete,” the account stated.

According to the Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Centre, Berton SP Panjaitan, in a virtual press conference broadcast on the BNPB YouTube channel, the CH-47 Chinook helicopters will be used for water bombing missions on 10 September 2026.

The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is a multi-role heavy-lift transport helicopter known for its robust performance and versatile capabilities across various military operations. The helicopter can be used to transport troops, move artillery, supply battlefield needs, and carry out humanitarian assistance missions.

In terms of design and features, the aircraft is characterised by its tandem rotor design, with two rotors each having three blades positioned at the front and rear of the helicopter. This configuration allows the Chinook to achieve high speeds while generating substantial lift. As a result, the Chinook is one of the fastest and most capable helicopters in its class.

The helicopter’s airframe is designed to withstand various conditions and improve survivability in combat situations. The Chinook uses modern composite materials and is equipped with a flight control system with triple redundancy to enhance safety and reliability.
