Factory faces losing license

TANGERANG (JP): Tangerang mayoralty has threatened to revoke the operation permit of a candy factory owned by PT Super World Wide Food Stuff Industri for failing to have liquid waste treatment equipment.

M. Harun, the head of the mayoralty's environment office, said over the weekend the factory had operated since 1994 without any liquid waster treatment equipment.

He said the factory, which is located in Jatiuwung district, just dumps its liquid waste directly into the nearby river.

Harun said his office had summoned the company's management, and demanded the establishment of a waste treatment facility.

Despite the summons the company, which produces 4,500 tons of candies a year, had continued dumping the waste into the river, he said.

Rusmin Adinata, a company executive, refused to comment on the matter, saying that the case was being handled by the company's president at its Jakarta's headquarters. (41/jun)
