Fact check: Video of Vice President Gibran meeting protesters on 26 August is false

A post on Facebook and TikTok featured an amateur video of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, claiming he personally went down to meet protesters on 26 August 2026.

The 14-second video was uploaded on 27 August 2026 and was narrated as footage of Gibran meeting protesters the previous night.

The post carried the following narration:

“While the DPR did not dare to come down, Vice President Gibran met the protesters directly! Amazing… My Vice President is on fire”

The post was accompanied by the caption:

“Meeting protesters tonight. #gibran 26 August 2026”

However, is it true that the video shows Vice President Gibran meeting protesters on 26 August 2026?

Explanation:

Based on investigation, the video is old footage and is unrelated to the demonstration on 26 August 2026. A similar video was found in a YouTube upload titled “Moments Vice President Gibran was confronted by students during a visit to Bengkulu, bringing a number of demands”, uploaded on 28 May 2025.

In that video, Gibran was making a visit to Bengkulu on Tuesday, 27 May 2025.

The visit was marked by a blockade by a crowd and students who conveyed a number of demands related to issues in Bengkulu, one of which was the scarcity of fuel.

Meanwhile, no official information has been found to date stating that Gibran met protesters on the night of 26 August 2026.

On 27 August 2026, President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka were known to have arrived at Bahrul Ulum Tambakberas Islamic Boarding School in Jombang Regency, East Java, to attend the 35th Nahdlatul Ulama Congress.

Therefore, the claim that the video shows Gibran meeting protesters on 26 August 2026 is false. The video is old footage of Gibran’s visit to Bengkulu in May 2025.
