Fact check: Video of tsunami after M 7.7 earthquake in NTT is false
A 16-second video uploaded to Facebook shows footage of high waves crashing onto land.
The video was captioned as showing a tsunami following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Nagekeo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
The magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Mbay, Nagekeo Regency, NTT, on Saturday (15/8) at 04.58 WIB.
The caption on the post read:
“Tsunami after the earthquake in NTT
Hopefully there are no casualties, amen”
However, is the video genuinely a tsunami following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in NTT?
Explanation:
Based on ANTARA’s investigation using Google Reverse Image to trace the source of the video, similar footage was found in a post by this account. The post described the footage as a storm surge that occurred in Dingalan, Aurora, Philippines, caused by Super Typhoon Fung-wong on 9 November 2025.
ANTARA also found the same footage in a TVRI post. That post explained that Super Typhoon Fung-wong struck the Philippines on Sunday (9/11/2025), killing two people and displacing around one million residents. The typhoon also caused major flooding due to waves battering coastal areas.
With sustained wind speeds reaching 185 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to 230 kilometres per hour, Super Typhoon Fung-wong, known locally as Uwan, was expected to make landfall in Aurora Province, central Luzon.
Therefore, the circulating video is not footage of a tsunami in NTT following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake, but rather old footage from the Philippines that was re-uploaded with a different context.
Meanwhile, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has ended its early tsunami warning following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Nagekeo, NTT. BMKG Deputy for Geophysics Nelly Florida Riama said that based on observations, there was no significant rise in sea level.
To date, the death toll from the NTT earthquake has reached 71 people. The central government and regional governments have also sent aid to communities affected by the earthquake.
