Fact check: Newborn Indonesian citizens automatically enrolled in BPJS healthcare scheme?
Jakarta (ANTARA/JACX) – A post on Facebook claims that every newborn Indonesian citizen will automatically be registered as an active participant in the BPJS Healthcare scheme without needing to be registered by their parents.
The post also states that this policy applies simultaneously in all hospitals throughout Indonesia and that the contributions are directly covered by the government.
Here is the narrative in the post:
“EVERY NEWBORN INDONESIAN CITIZEN WILL AUTOMATICALLY BECOME AN ACTIVE BPJS PARTICIPANT, STARTING APRIL 26, 2026.”
However, is it true that all newborn Indonesian citizens automatically become active participants in the BPJS Healthcare scheme?
Explanation:
Based on research, no information or official statements from the government or credible media outlets state that all newborn Indonesian citizens are automatically registered as active participants in the BPJS Healthcare scheme without a registration process.
As reported by ANTARA, BPJS Kesehatan explained that newborns who are automatically covered by Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional (JKN) only apply to babies whose parents are registered as Penerima Bantuan Iuran (PBI) recipients.
The Director of Membership at BPJS Kesehatan, Akmal Budi Yulianto, said that babies of PBI JKN participants are indeed automatically covered and do not need to be re-registered.
However, for participants outside the PBI segment, registration of newborns must still be carried out in accordance with applicable regulations.
“What we can say regarding the financing scheme is that those whose parents are included in the PBI JKN participant segment are definitely covered; their children are automatically covered and do not need to be registered,” said Akmal.
In addition, Presidential Regulation Number 64 of 2020 concerning amendments to Presidential Regulation Number 82 of 2018 on Health Insurance states that registration of newborns must be carried out no later than 28 days after birth.
