Facing Terrorism Threats, Prabowo Adds Deputy for Preparedness and Counter-Radicalisation at BNPT
The Government of the Republic of Indonesia officially issued Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 9 of 2026 on Monday to strengthen the organisational structure and coordination functions of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) in addressing global terrorism threats. The Perpres on BNPT, which was promulgated in Jakarta on 9 February 2026, also revokes Presidential Regulation No. 46 of 2010 on the National Counter-Terrorism Agency as amended by Presidential Regulation No. 12 of 2012. In the new structure, BNPT now has a more specific division of tasks with the introduction of four main deputies: the Deputy for National Preparedness and Counter-Radicalisation, the Deputy for Deradicalisation, the Deputy for Coordination among Law Enforcement Agencies and Victim Recovery, and the Deputy for International Cooperation. This Perpres also designates BNPT as the centre for crisis analysis and control, serving as a facility for the President in establishing crisis management policies. In carrying out these functions, BNPT is authorised to provide strategic input and mobilise national resources in handling terrorism acts. In addition to structural strengthening, the government is integrating data through national digital transformation within BNPT. Provisions in this regulation mandate data interoperability among government agencies to ensure that terrorism counteraction coordination aligns with national development risk management principles. Furthermore, BNPT’s duties now include broader protection for law enforcement officers and witnesses involved in terrorism cases. Such protection is provided to investigators, prosecutors, judges, and correctional officers along with their families from potential threats arising from the performance of their duties. Upon the commencement of this Presidential Regulation, all existing positions and officials holding positions within BNPT will continue to carry out their duties and functions until further regulated.
