JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim returned to attend the trial of the alleged corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook-based laptops at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Monday (11/5/2026). However, Nadiem is scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday (13/5/2026). The hearing was opened by Chief Judge Purwanto S. Abdullah, who inquired about Nadiem’s health condition, as he had previously been reported to be receiving medical treatment. “On behalf of the defendant Nadiem Anwar Makarim. The session is opened and declared open to the public. Alright, defendant, for today we ask about your health condition?” said Purwanto during the trial. “My current condition is that I am still under treatment. The doctor has reported that I am ready for surgery soon,” Nadiem replied. He explained that the surgery would be performed at Abdi Waluyo Hospital on Tuesday (12/5/2026) for pre-operative procedures or on Wednesday (13/5/2026) as the scheduled operation date. Nevertheless, Nadiem assured that he would continue to follow the proceedings. He admitted to receiving pain relief medication from the hospital to help him attend the hearing. “I will try my best, Your Honour. So I am ready to face today’s hearing,” he added. This continuation hearing took place after he was unable to attend the previous session on Tuesday (5/5/2026). In this case, former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim, along with three other defendants, is said to have caused a state financial loss of Rp 2.1 trillion. Nadiem is charged with enriching himself by Rp 809 billion. This amount is said to originate from Google’s investment in Gojek or PT AKAB.
