The American technology giant, Meta, has begun tightening protections for teenage users on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. This new policy was announced after the social media giant faced immense pressure from various nations.

Several countries have implemented bans on social media access for children under the age of 16, including Indonesia and Australia. Recently, Malaysia announced a similar policy, as did Sweden, which restricts social media access for children under 15. The objective is to protect minors from security risks on online platforms.

Meta announced the global expansion of specific content settings for teenagers. The policy aims to limit young users’ access to content deemed age-inappropriate while simultaneously reducing excessive exposure to certain themes on social media.

Last April, Meta acknowledged that legal and regulatory pressures in both the United States and the European Union regarding child protection issues could potentially have a significant impact on its business and financial performance.

As part of the new policy, Meta is making content settings for users aged 13 and above a default feature on all teenage accounts. This system is designed to filter various types of content deemed inappropriate for young users.

Furthermore, Meta will introduce a “Limited Content” feature on Facebook and Messenger later this year. This feature offers a more stringent experience with broader content restrictions compared to standard settings.

Instagram is also testing a new feature that limits teenagers from seeing too much content related to specific themes, instead encouraging a more balanced home feed.

“We recognise that some content, such as posts about nutrition, weightlifting, or how to manage anxiety, can be beneficial. However, such content needs to be balanced with other types of content and should not be displayed repeatedly,” Meta stated, as reported by Reuters.
