Facing Global Dynamics, Commission IV of DPR Requests Strengthening of National Food Security

To address global dynamics, strengthening national food security is essential through more optimal and adaptive management of government food reserves against various global challenges. This was stated by the Chair of Commission IV of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Siti Hediati Soeharto, during a Working Meeting and Hearing with Commission IV of the DPR RI involving the Minister of Agriculture, Head of the National Food Agency, Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, President Director of Bulog, President Director of PT Pupuk, and President Director of RNI at the Nusantara Building, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 7 April 2026. The woman often called Titiek Soeharto said that national food security must also be strengthened through cross-sectoral synergy, including between the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), the National Food Agency (Bapanas), and food SOEs that play an important role in maintaining the stability of food supply and prices domestically. “Commission IV of the DPR RI requests that the relevant ministries and agencies strengthen government food reserves and ensure the stabilisation of food supply and prices amid global dynamics and climate change,” she said. The legislator from the Gerindra Party faction assessed that strengthening food reserves is an important step to anticipate potential supply disruptions, whether due to global crises, climate change, or domestic distribution disruptions. Therefore, the optimisation of the role of Perum Bulog and ID Food as the Food SOE Holding is considered very strategic in maintaining the availability of national food stocks. Commission IV also encourages an increase in domestic food production to bolster national food security. Such steps include the provision of superior seeds, fertiliser availability, strengthening irrigation networks, and support for agricultural tools and machinery both in the pre-harvest and post-harvest stages. Her side also appreciates the performance of Perum Bulog and the Food SOE Holding, which are deemed to have contributed to maintaining the stability of national food supply and prices as well as strengthening government food reserves. “Efforts to maintain food security must be carried out in an integrated manner, from increasing production, strengthening food reserves, to stabilising distribution and food prices,” she said.
