Facing Dualism, IPHI Seeks Path to Reconciliation

Efforts to end the dualism within the leadership of the Indonesian Hajj Brotherhood Association (IPHI) emerged during the VIII IPHI Congress in Jakarta on Saturday (19/09/2026). Reconciliation is considered vital so that the vast potential of Hajj alumni can be redirected towards the welfare of the community and the nation.

Indonesian academic and educational figure, Prof. Fasli Jalal, stated that IPHI possesses a massive membership base. Every year, approximately 200,000 to over 220,000 Indonesian pilgrims perform the Hajj pilgrimage. These individuals have undergone a long process before being selected to fulfil the fifth pillar of Islam.

“Therefore, if this is organised collectively within IPHI, I believe this constitutes a fundamental component,” said Fasli while attending the VIII IPHI Congress in Jakarta, Saturday (19/09/2026).

According to him, pilgrims who have completed the Hajj pilgrimage possess great potential to provide benefits upon returning to the homeland. Consequently, the existence of an organisation capable of gathering and organising this potential is crucial.

Fasli expressed his hope that the internal dynamics that have occurred thus far can be resolved through reconciliation. He reminded all parties to prioritise the spirit of competing in goodness.

“My hope, of course, is that reconciliation can be achieved because there is currently dualism. But ultimately, it is about fastabiqul khairat—everyone should strive to compete in righteousness,” he said.

The General Chairman of IPHI, Ahmad Yani Basuki, stated that the organisation is aware of the internal dynamics within its structure. According to him, differences of opinion are a part of organisational life and a solution must be found.

“All dynamics, differences of opinion, and such matters always have a way to demonstrate what is called islah (reconciliation),” said Basuki.

He noted that the VIII Congress serves as an important momentum to conduct consolidation while ensuring the organisation’s continuity and accountability. The Congress is also expected to strengthen IPHI’s commitment to nurturing the spiritual integrity of the Hajj pilgrimage for the interests of the community, nation, and state.
