Extreme Weather Causes Trees to Fall in Two Areas of Padang

Two trees fell in Padang on Thursday, 21 May, as heavy rain and gusty winds swept the city. One incident occurred on Jalan Sutan Syahrir, Padang Selatan, and the other in front of Posyandu Lansia Ayah Bunda on Jalan Jakarta, Ulak Karang. A rambutan tree collapsed and damaged a Musala on Jalan Sutan Syahrir. Fortunately, cleanup crews from BPBD, TRC Satlinmas Satpol PP cleared the debris. Kalaksa BPBD Padang, Hendri Zulviton, urged residents to stay vigilant during downpours with strong winds and to avoid sheltering under trees or parking beneath them for safety. Cleanup operations by Satlinmas together with kelurahan and RT/RW were aligned with the Padang Rancak Programme to keep the city environment clean, safe and well-regulated; the latest status was calm and under control. In weather news, BMKG warned of preparedness in Babel, Kalbar and Maluku due to cyclonic circulation that could trigger heavy to very heavy rain today. BMKG noted cyclonic circulation forming in the southwest Indian Ocean off Bengkulu, the Makassar Strait, the Maluku Sea, and the northern Papua Ocean, with analyses pointing to active Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and Kelvin wave activity contributing to heavy rainfall in various Indonesian regions, even as daytime temperatures reached up to 37.1°C. BMKG also cautioned about potential large waves off the western Indian Ocean coast of Aceh and southern NTT on 19–22 May 2026. Earlier, other areas, including Sukabumi in West Java and Bangka Belitung, experienced storms causing damage and injuries.
