Extreme Weather Alert in Banten Through 10 March, Heavy Rain and High Waves
The National Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) Regional Office II has issued an early warning regarding the potential for extreme weather including heavy rain, strong winds and high waves in the Banten region. The conditions are expected to persist until 10 March 2026.
Head of BMKG Regional Office II Hartanto said a Tropical Disturbance 90S has been observed in the southern Indian Ocean off Banten and West Java, with a moderate to high chance of developing into a tropical cyclone, moving eastwards within the next 24 hours.
“This condition is reinforced by spatial Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) activity, Kelvin wave and low-frequency atmospheric waves, as well as strong local instability that supports convective processes, thereby increasing the likelihood of significant weather in the coming week,” Hartanto said on Thursday, 5 March 2026.
Gusts up to 45 km/h are expected across much of Banten. In addition, the presence of Tropical Disturbance 90S is having indirect impacts on weather and coastal waters in Banten through 8 March 2026.
“Therefore, the public should remain vigilant for a high potential for sea wave heights forecast to reach the high category (2.5–4.0 metres) which could occur in the western Sunda Strait at Pandeglang and the southern waters of Pandeglang, as well as the moderate category (1.25–2.5 metres) in the northern Sunda Strait and southern waters of Lebak,” he said.
Additionally, the full moon phase on 3 March 2026 could further raise maximum sea levels. Based on water level monitoring and tide predictions, coastal flooding (rob) could occur from 4-9 March 2026, particularly along the western Sunda Strait coast of Pandeglang (Labuan District), southern coast of Pandeglang (Cikeusik District), and southern coast of Lebak (Bayah District).
“BMKG urges the public to remain vigilant for extreme weather, especially in disaster-prone areas, by taking precautionary measures for safety and by monitoring official weather information via the Info BMKG app and the social media channel @bmkgwilayah2. Information will be updated as weather developments occur,” he said.
Hartanto urged residents of Banten Province to heighten vigilance for the potential rise in rainfall through 10 March.
“BMKG Regional Office II forecasts that several atmospheric phenomena currently active are capable of producing rainfall of moderate to very heavy intensity in Banten Province,” he said.
Forecast rainfall intensity in several areas of Banten Province for the following period:
