Extreme Heat, Hajj Pilgrims Urged to Stay in Tents Between 10:00 and 16:00

The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has issued specific advice for 2026 Hajj pilgrims to avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours, between 10:00 and 16:00 Makkah time. Citing the official HIMPUH website, the measure comes amid fears of extreme temperatures reaching up to 47 degrees Celsius during peak Hajj season. The guidance was issued as millions of pilgrims undergo key rituals, including the standing at Arafah today, Tuesday (26 May). Extreme heat significantly increases the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke due to high temperatures. The ministry urges pilgrims to remain in tents or accommodation during extreme heat periods, rest, avoid outdoor activities during peak temperatures, and perform prayers at mosques near their accommodations. Pilgrims are also advised not to push walking journeys if heat is too strenuous. Those experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, elevated body temperature, headaches, or blurred vision should immediately contact emergency services on 911. Saudi health authorities reported handling 144 cases of heatstroke since the main Hajj rituals began. To anticipate health surge, Saudi Arabia has deployed over 50,000 healthcare workers and 3,000 ambulances across holy sites. Weather during Hajj is described as extreme, with temperatures expected between 44 and 47 degrees Celsius during the peak Arafah rituals. In addition to heat, strong winds of 15 to 40 km/h are expected during the day, potentially carrying dust and sand that could increase health risks, particularly for those with respiratory issues. Extreme weather poses a major challenge for this year’s Hajj amid millions of pilgrims performing rituals in open areas.
