JAKARTA — Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged residents in the Jakarta region to avoid spending time outdoors during daytime hours whilst extreme heat conditions persist.

“Avoid direct sunlight exposure, particularly between 10:00 and 14:00 WIB,” said Guswanto when contacted by Kompas.com on Tuesday (17 March 2026).

According to Guswanto, the use of sunscreen is also a mandatory measure to protect the skin.

“Exercise caution for vulnerable groups, including children, elderly persons, and outdoor workers,” he noted.

The extreme heat experienced over the past several days in Jakarta has been caused by clear sky conditions resulting from minimal cloud cover.

These conditions have triggered optimal solar radiation and penetration of the Earth’s surface.

“The transition from the rainy season to the dry season is evident from clearer skies, reduced cloud cover, resulting in stronger surface heating,” he explained.

BMKG recorded maximum temperatures of approximately 35.6 degrees Celsius with an ultra-violet (UV) index classified as purple or extreme danger.

“It has the potential to remain hot through 20-22 March 2026,” he added.
