Exposure to Radicalism Can Target Children in the Digital Space
Jakarta (ANTARA) - A member of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), Kawiyan, has reminded of the risks of exposure to radicalism targeting children when accessing the digital space without parental supervision. Kawiyan stated that children can be exposed to radicalism and terrorism ideologies through communication with unknown individuals on digital platforms. “Nowadays, many parents think their children are safe in their rooms, but they could be communicating anywhere via mobile phones and connecting with terrorist networks,” Kawiyan said during a discussion session in Jakarta on Thursday. This situation serves as a warning that the digital space poses dangerous risks to children if not accompanied by supervision. Kawiyan assessed that the presence of Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic System Providers in Child Protection, or PP Tunas, is one step to strengthen child protection in the digital space. On the other hand, Kawiyan reminded parents that they still play a crucial role in preventing children from being exposed to radicalism or other negative content on social media. “Parents still have the obligation to build open communication. This is very important so that if a child finds something on social media, they will report it,” he said. The government, through the Ministry of Communication and Digital, has affirmed that it will carry out procedures in accordance with applicable laws against non-compliant platforms.
