Exporters awarded for perseverance
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto will present Primaniyarta
awards to 68 exporting companies for their distinguished
achievements and staying power during the last five years of slow
export growth, an official announced yesterday.
"The award presentation, slated to take place at the State
Palace on Tuesday, is expected to encourage exports which were
flat over the last five years," Acting Chairman of the National
Agency for Export Development Arifin Lumban Gaol said.
Arifin said that the government had set aside 78 awards but
that only 68 exporters returned the questionnaires distributed by
the Ministry of Trade.
According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, the growth rate
of non-oil exports slowed from 27.67 percent in 1992 to 16.23
percent in 1993 and to 12.12 percent in 1994.
Despite the slow growth, non-oil exports increased to US$23.3
billion in 1992, $27.1 billion in 1993 and $30.3 billion in 1994.
The ministry's data, provided by Arifin, indicates that the
performance of non-oil exports was poor due to the flat growth in
the exports of wood products, garments, textiles, shoes, fish,
mollusks and shellfish.
The amount of commodities exported during the January-July
period of 1995 remained at the 1994 level of $8.1 billion.
According to the bureau of statistics, 214 companies in total
were eligible for the awards.
"In evaluating the nominated companies, we used statistics
provided by various institutions," said Arifin.
Clearance from Bank Indonesia, the Directorate General of Tax,
the Environmental Impact Management Agency, the Directorate
General of Customs and Excise and the Export Service Facilitating
Agency was required for the award nominees.
The award winning companies classified as small had annual
exports totaling between $500,000 and $5 million, medium
companies exported between $5 million and $15 million, medium-big
between $15 million and $50 million and big companies were those
with exports totaling more than $50 million.(kod)
