Explosives used to catch fish

AMBON, Maluku: Traditional fishermen in the Rum Island, Banda
Neira subdistrict, Central Maluku, are worried about fishermen
from other regions operating in the Banda waters using
explosives.

"So many dead fishes were floating around after those
newcomers used explosives," La Empy, one of the fishermen, was
quoted by Antara as saying. "They are destroying the coral reefs
as well."

La Empy said that he and his friends were trying to fish near
the Manuk Island, some 60 miles south of Banda Island, when they
saw three boats they didn't recognize.

La Empy said these boats were also operating in the Serua and
Walirang Mati islands, some 150 sea miles south of Banda.

La Empy said he suspected the boats came from either Bali or
East Nusa Tenggara. (swe)
