Explosion Rocks Moscow Train Station, One Police Officer Killed and Two Injured
A man detonated an explosive device near a police patrol car at a railway station complex in Moscow, the Russian capital, in the early hours of Tuesday (24 February) local time. The blast killed one police officer and injured two others, in addition to killing the perpetrator.
Russia’s Interior Ministry, in a statement via Telegram as reported by AFP on Tuesday (24/2/2026), said the explosion struck the area around Savyolovsky railway station square in central Moscow at approximately 00:05 local time.
Savyolovsky Station, located in the northern area of Moscow, is one of the main railway hubs in the Russian capital.
According to the Interior Ministry’s statement, the perpetrator approached traffic police officers who were seated inside their patrol vehicle before the explosion suddenly occurred. The as-yet-unidentified perpetrator died at the scene.
Reports from the TASS news agency indicated that the targeted police patrol car sustained severe damage but did not catch fire.
Several Russian local media outlets published photographs showing the condition of the patrol vehicle with its windows shattered. The blast site was immediately cordoned off by local police, and several ambulances were dispatched to the scene.
Russia’s Interior Ministry initially reported that the perpetrator had fled the scene. However, minutes later, authorities confirmed that the male suspect had been found dead at the blast site after reviewing security camera footage.
Local authorities did not provide further details regarding the type of explosive used or the motive behind the attack.
Russia’s Investigative Committee, which is responsible for probing major crimes, stated that it had opened an investigation into suspected attempted murder of law enforcement officers and illegal possession of explosives.
Attacks on Russian law enforcement have been relatively frequent in recent times. In December last year, two police officers were killed in an explosion in southern Moscow. That blast occurred as the two officers attempted to intercept a suspicious individual near their patrol vehicle.
