Explosion Rocks Fireworks Shop in China, Killing Eight People
An explosion rocked a fireworks shop in eastern China, killing at least eight people and injuring two others in a blast that triggered a fire.
Residents in rural China frequently set off sparklers and shrieking “rocket” fireworks to celebrate holidays and significant events such as Chinese New Year, which falls on Tuesday (17 February).
The explosion, as reported by AFP on Monday (16 February 2026), occurred in the Donghai district area of Jiangsu Province on Sunday (15 February) afternoon, at approximately 2.30pm local time.
Local authorities said that “improper disposal of fireworks” by one or more local villagers caused the explosion at a fireworks shop in the area.
“Emergency response, fire service, public security and health authorities immediately rushed to the scene to conduct rescue and response operations,” the Donghai district authorities said in a social media statement.
The statement noted that the fire caused by the explosion was extinguished by approximately 4.00pm local time.
The Donghai district authorities announced that at least eight people were killed and two others sustained minor burns.
An investigation into the deadly incident is underway. Those responsible for the incident have been detained by the authorities.
The Ministry of Emergency Management said China had entered a peak period for fireworks use during the Chinese New Year holiday, warning residents against unsafe practices such as test-firing or smoking outside shops.
The Ministry of Emergency Management also issued a warning notice to fireworks companies across China “requiring thorough inspections” of safety risks and hazards.
