Explosion occurs during firecracker manufacturing in Kertek, Wonosobo
An explosion occurred during a firecracker manufacturing process in the Pandansari area of Kertek Subdistrict, Wonosobo Regency, Central Java.
Kertek Police Chief AKP Sutono said in Wonosobo on Friday that the incident, which took place at approximately 23:30 Western Indonesian Time, left a young man identified by the initials FR with burns and lacerations across multiple parts of his body.
Based on witness statements, the incident began on Thursday at around 23:00 WIB when the victim FR and a witness identified as AR purchased firecracker powder in Siono Hamlet, Bojasari Village, Kertek District.
The victim and witness subsequently assembled firecrackers inside the home of a resident identified as M. The manufacturing process involved rolled paper materials and equipment including a tank and an iron-cutting angle grinder.
Sutono said sparks from the angle grinder being used to cut iron were suspected to have ignited the firecracker materials being assembled, causing the explosion that injured the victim.
Residents who became aware of the incident immediately transported the victim to PKU Muhammadiyah Wonosobo Hospital for medical treatment. Following examination, the victim was found to have sustained burns and lacerations to both hands, his chest, face, and thighs as a result of the explosion.
Sutono said his team is continuing to investigate the incident.
"We are still conducting an investigation, particularly to determine the source of the firecracker materials. Should any violations be found, we will certainly take action in accordance with applicable legal provisions," he said.
He urged the public not to purchase, store, or assemble explosive materials illegally, as doing so poses a danger to personal safety and carries legal consequences.
