At least 40 people died in an explosion at a building in northeastern Myanmar on Sunday (31 May), which was reportedly storing explosives for mining activities. The explosion occurred in Kaungtup village, Namhkam township, approximately three kilometres from the Chinese border. Around 70 others were injured, according to rescue teams. The area is controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), an ethnic armed group frequently in conflict with Myanmar’s government. Myanmar has been engulfed in civil war since the 2021 coup that ousted the democratic government of Aung San Suu Kyi, with the military junta facing various pro-democracy and ethnic armed groups. Latest updates on the explosion: The death toll remains unconfirmed. Rescue teams quoted by Associated Press reported between 40 to 46 deaths, including children, while AFP cited figures of 46 to 59. Local Myanmar media, including Shan State’s Shwe Phee Myay online outlet, reported 50 to 55 fatalities. Local reports state the explosion damaged numerous homes in the vicinity, with rescue teams still searching for victims trapped under rubble. Namhkam hospital also reported a shortage of blood supplies for the injured. Chinese state television CCTV reported the explosion caused multiple casualties and significant damage to surrounding structures, adding that initial investigations indicated the blast occurred at a site storing explosives for mining. Armed group response: In a Telegram statement, TNLA confirmed its economic department stored high-grade gelignite for mining and rock blasting purposes. TNLA expressed condolences to victims’ families and pledged a thorough investigation. Gelignite is commonly used in mining, but its chemical composition can become unstable if stored improperly over extended periods. TNLA is part of the Three Brotherhood Alliance armed coalition fighting for greater ethnic autonomy. Namhkam has been under their control since a major offensive against Myanmar’s military in late 2023. TNLA signed a ceasefire with the Myanmar military last October following Chinese mediation, but tensions remain.
