An explosion occurred at the luxury Grand Polonia housing estate in Medan Polonia district, Medan City, on Monday (20 July) afternoon.

The explosion caused damage to at least five houses.

The head of Medan Polonia district, Alfi Pane, said the incident took place at around 16:00 local time. The house suspected to be the source of the explosion has suffered severe damage.

“It happened at around 16:00. One house exploded, but the surrounding houses were also affected,” Alfi said when contacted by CNNIndonesia.com.

According to him, the blast not only damaged the main building but also several houses to the left and right of the site. A number of parts of the buildings sustained damage from the explosion.

“The total number of affected houses is around four to five units. There is a canopy that collapsed, zinc roofs were damaged, and several walls were blown out by the explosion,” he said.

The exact cause of the explosion is not yet known. The police and related teams are still examining the scene to determine the source of the blast.

“As for the cause, I have not received any information yet. The police are here, everyone is present,” he explained.

Alfi also said he had not obtained information regarding the identity of the owner of the house at the centre of the explosion. In addition, his office is still awaiting official data on the possibility of casualties.

“Whether there are victims or not, we also do not know yet. Earlier information suggested there might be people inside the house, but we are waiting for the results of the officers’ examination,” he said.

However, there has been no official statement from the police regarding the incident.
