Explosion Heard Near Oil Tanker Off Oman Coast, Crew Reported Safe

The master of an oil tanker reported hearing an explosion near the vessel whilst sailing off the coast of Oman on Sunday, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). UKMTO confirmed that all personnel on board were safe following the incident. “The vessel and all crew are reported safe,” an official statement read. The maritime monitoring body added that the event took place 20 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman. In response, authorities issued a cautionary advisory to other vessels transiting the area. “Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity,” UKMTO urged. The explosion report emerged amidst regional security dynamics. On the same day, Iran stated it was nearing an agreement with Oman regarding a new route crossing the Strait of Hormuz. The statement came just hours after the United States called off a planned major strike to allow space for diplomacy. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed progress in talks with Oman, whose territory lies across the strategic strait. “An agreement is close with Oman… regarding a new route through it,” Baqaei said, though he stressed that the planned deal does not signify a full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
