An explosion occurred at a chemical plant in Gerem, Cilegon, Banten, releasing white smoke and a pungent odour across the area. The incident took place around 2:30pm on Monday, 25 May 2026, with residents reporting loud explosions and sirens. White smoke enveloped the vicinity of the plant.
Local resident Faturrohmi told journalists: “I heard an explosion and sirens. It was from PT MCCI; the smell was like burning tyres around Gerem.” His home is approximately three kilometres from the plant, and the explosion caused panic among nearby residents.
