Exploring Tambora's Gang Venus: From Sunless to Brighter
Gang Venus’s entrance is directly next to Masjid Az-Zahiriyah. At the entrance, numerous street vendor carts are parked on both sides of the alley. The alley spans only 2-3 metres in width, becoming even narrower when motorbikes pass pedestrians. Residents are seen relaxing outside their homes, while others wash clothes and hang them to dry near the entrance. Some cook meals in the alleyway, setting up stoves, gas cylinders, and tables as makeshift outdoor kitchens. The area comprises four neighbourhood units (RTs): 1, 2, 12, and 13. Deeper inside, narrower and denser alleys branch off. Most houses in Gang Venus are built up to three storeys, with some featuring balconies that overhang the alley. These balconies often block sunlight from reaching the alley floor, while some residents cover the road with tarps. Tuti, 44, a resident of RT 1 RW 3, said Gang Venus has gradually transformed since a major fire six years ago. Building regulations were enforced to prevent overcrowding and allow sunlight. “The area used to be pitch dark with no sunlight. After the fire six years ago, the government advised against extending buildings forward, which was causing the darkness. Thankfully, the community has understood and it’s no longer like before,” said Tuti, who has lived in Gang Venus since childhood. However, Tuti noted some sections remain dark due to existing overcrowded structures. “Yes, especially at the back. It’s still dark there, near my house,” she added. Tuti also revealed that residents remain haunted by the memory of the fire six years ago, constantly fearing a recurrence. “I’m extremely worried—this isn’t just me; all residents share this fear. The fear of another fire is ever-present,” she said. Tuti mentioned a recent fire in Tambora last month, where seven houses were destroyed due to an electrical short circuit. “A fire caused by an electrical short circuit occurred just a month ago,” she added. Budi, 40, a newcomer from Pandeglang, Banten, said he has rented in Gang Venus for five months. He described it as significantly cheaper than other areas. “It’s affordable here; I can rent for under Rp 600,000 with my wife,” Budi said. Budi said he has no issues with the area’s conditions, noting it is now well-lit and suitable for drying clothes. “It’s bright enough now. I can hang clothes here as usual,” he added.
