Expired food seized from stores

BOGOR: Dozens of expired food items were confiscated by the police from a number of supermarkets in Bogor on Tuesday afternoon.

Bogor Police chief of detectives First Insp. Fridon said the items were seized from a Hero supermarket on Jl. Pajajaran, a Hero in the Internusa Mall, Sinar Matahari and the Yogya Department Store.

Managers of the stores were taken to the police station for questioning.

No expiration dates were written on the packages of the expired products, which included snacks produced by PT Sarijasa Murni, sausages produced by PT Asiafood Industry and chili sauce from PT Rejeki.

Fridon said the store owners could be charged under Law No. 8/1999 on consumer protection, which carries a five-year jail term.

The police operation was carried out to protect consumers, whose numbers usually increase sharply ahead of the Idul Fitri holiday.--JP
