Experts Warn of Dangers of Carrying Excessive Baggage During Mudik
JAKARTA — The tradition of mudik often leads many people to transport various items to their hometowns, ranging from gifts, clothing, to household necessities. However, carrying excessive baggage without considering vehicle capacity can impact driving stability.
According to Sony Susmana, Director of Training at Safety Defensive Consultant (SDCI), drivers should refrain from forcing their vehicles to carry baggage beyond essential needs during mudik journeys. Susmana explained that excessive weight will alter the vehicle’s weight distribution, making the car more difficult to handle, particularly when turning, changing lanes, or performing emergency braking.
Additionally, the placement of baggage requires careful consideration to prevent risk to passengers inside the cabin. “Baggage should be properly arranged and not piled haphazardly. If not arranged neatly, sudden braking can cause items to shift or even be thrown forward,” he said.
Susmana recommended placing heavier items at the bottom of the boot to maintain the vehicle’s centre of gravity stability, whilst lighter items can be placed on top in positions that prevent shifting. Proper packing practices are essential for ensuring passenger safety during long-distance travel during the busy mudik season.
