Mont Blanc, known as the highest peak in Western Europe, has changed in height. The latest measurement puts the mountain, which lies on the border between France and Italy, at 4,807.47 metres—nearly two metres higher than in 2023.

The results were announced by geodetic survey specialists in Haute-Savoie, France, who have regularly monitored Mont Blanc’s height since 2001. They said the latest figure is close to historical measurements recorded in the late 19th century.

However, the increase does not necessarily indicate a permanent change to the mountain or a direct impact from global warming. Experts explained that Mont Blanc’s height can vary with weather conditions, particularly rainfall and wind strength, which affect the movement and distribution of snow around the summit.

‘Today, the shape of the summit is greatly influenced by wind strength and rainfall, even though conditions have been very dry this year,’ said Mathieu Dragon, a certified geodetic surveyor in Haute-Savoie, according to Euronews.

The experts said the latest measurement is a snapshot of conditions at a particular time. The recorded change is therefore not enough to draw conclusions about the effect of global warming on Mont Blanc.

This year, the specialists also used a new method to obtain a more accurate picture of the summit’s structure. They employed ground-penetrating radar to map the ice layers covering the peak and the underlying rock formations.

The technology enables researchers to examine the ice layers and locate the bedrock summit, which has until now been concealed by snow and ice. The data are expected to improve the accuracy of measurements and help specialists monitor changes in Mont Blanc’s shape and height in the years ahead.
