Expert Reveals Simple Ways to Live a Happier Life, It's Not About Money
It turns out that happiness doesn’t always come from big changes such as a high salary, a new job, or a life without problems.
Happiness expert Dr. Mark Williamson says that happiness is actually more shaped by the small things we do every day.
Quoting Express (16/5/2026), Williamson shared these findings after 15 years of researching mental well-being and happiness.
In his book, Make Life Happier, he explains that the most effective way to feel happier is not just to focus on oneself, but also to care for others.
“The biggest boost to happiness comes when we combine taking care of ourselves with caring for others,” said Williamson.
According to the CEO of Action for Happiness, a person does not need to immediately change their entire life to feel better. Small steps taken consistently can already have a big impact.
Therefore, he suggests that people be more present in their daily lives and start paying attention to small moments.
One simple way he suggests is to imagine oneself in the future, then ask: “What advice would my future self give about what is really important right now?”
In addition, Williamson also highlights the importance of being realistically optimistic.
According to him, the human brain tends to focus more on negative things. Therefore, one bad comment often leaves a deeper impression than many good things that happen.
However, he emphasizes that optimism does not mean pretending that everything is okay.
“Look at the situation as it is, but choose to focus on what helps,” he said.
He suggests using the word “and” to help change the way of thinking. For example, “This situation is difficult and I can still move forward.”
