Expert Highlights Integrity of State Audit Institution in Blueray Trial

The emergence of Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) member Nyoman Adhi Suryadnyana’s name in the trial of an alleged bribery case within the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) has sparked public attention. Although it does not yet point to a criminal offence, the trial facts are considered a test of ethics and integrity for the state auditor institution.

Counter-intelligence analysis specialist R. Gautama Wiranegara assessed that the core issue is not whether a criminal element exists, but how the BPK responds to the mention of one of its members in a public trial. “The issue is not about punishing someone because their name was mentioned in court. The issue is how a state institution maintains public trust when one of its members’ names surfaces in the facts of a corruption trial that is of national concern,” Gautama told reporters.

During the trial, Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors presented a photograph of Nyoman Adhi Suryadnyana to confirm the introduction route between the defendant John Field and former DJBC Director of Enforcement and Investigation, Rizal. Rizal explained that he knew John through Nyoman, while John confirmed that the person in the photograph shown by the prosecutor was someone he knew. The prosecutor also revealed that John’s contact number in Rizal’s mobile phone was saved under the identity “John Nyoman”, as part of the relationship construct being examined in court.

Legally, these facts do not yet prove any criminal act by Nyoman. The KPK has also never named him a suspect. However, Gautama noted that in complex corruption cases, the route of introduction is a common fact examined by investigators through relationship mapping. “An introduction is not a crime. But in complex corruption cases, the route of access is one of the facts commonly tested to understand the network construct,” he said. He added that several questions remain worthy of public explanation, including when John Field and Nyoman became acquainted, in what capacity the relationship was formed, whether it occurred when Nyoman was still serving at Customs or after he became a BPK member, and whether the relationship was personal or professional.
