Expert Explains Why Pregnant Women Urinate More Frequently

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Urology specialist Prof. Dr. Harrina Erlianti Rahardjo, Sp.U(K), Ph.D, has explained that pregnant women urinate more frequently and sometimes struggle to hold it in. This occurs because as the foetus grows in the womb, which is located behind the bladder, it increases pressure, thereby heightening sensitivity and the urge to urinate. “There is a baby in the uterus, which increases abdominal pressure. There is pressure on the bladder, which can cause incontinence,” Prof Rina said during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday. She added that urinary tract infections are common in pregnant women due to hormonal changes and other factors. If a pregnant woman experiences difficulty holding in urine or severe incontinence, she is advised to seek medical attention to prevent urinary tract infections during pregnancy. The disorder is often characterised by symptoms such as a sudden, compelling urge to urinate or urinating as frequently as every 30 minutes to an hour. Patients often consider this condition a normal part of ageing or a consequence of childbirth, leading to delays in receiving an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. “We see that many people live with bladder and pelvic floor disorders without receiving a proper diagnosis or therapy,” said Dr Grace Frelita, MM, Chief Medical Officer of Siloam International Hospitals.
