Expert Asks Team 9 to Validate Gold and Money Evidence in Ex-Deputy Attorney General Case
Legal experts from Trisakti University and Bina Nusantara University (Binus) have highlighted the corruption scandal engulfing former Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) Febrie Adriansyah. They view the scandal as a real portrait of structural crime and disregard for the law committed by law enforcement officials who ought to uphold justice and safeguard the integrity and sanctity of the law.
These views were expressed by several speakers at a public discussion titled “From the PLTU Coal Corruption to Money Laundering: Dissecting the Anatomy of Corruption and TPPU in the Ex-Jampidsus Scandal of the Attorney General’s Office”, organised by the Indonesian Corruption Eradication Community Coalition in Central Jakarta on Thursday, 23 July.
Maria Silvya E. Wangga, Head of the Criminal Law Study Centre at Trisakti University, said that in recent developments the law is no longer treated as a noun in connection with the ex-Jampidsus case.
This is because the case was transferred even though such a move is not recognised under Indonesian criminal procedure law — an ongoing investigation was suddenly handed over solely due to a political decision. In other words, the law here is being treated as a noun.
“The law as a noun. An object played with by those in power. If the law were placed as a verb, then the law should already be working for the interests of the people — the law must be active,” Maria explained.
She stressed that the handling of the ex-Jampidsus case must be meticulous, given that the Jampidsus is a senior official within the Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung).
“Handling this ex-Jampidsus case must involve the senior structures within the Attorney General’s Office, because the perpetrator is the former Jampidsus,” Maria said.
Separately, she also highlighted circulating claims that the evidence revealed in the ex-Febrie Adriansyah case, such as gold and cash, is fake.
Maria called on the nine-member special team to validate all the evidence seized by police during a search of a house in Sentul, Bogor.
“To address this circulating speculation, the task of the special nine-member team formed to handle the ex-Jampidsus case must be to carry out validation and collaborate with police investigators to prove that the evidence and items of proof are not fake but genuine. That way, negative interpretations of this case among the public will not arise,” Maria said.
